Karl E. “Bubba”/“Ernie” Handwerk, 67, of Philadelphia, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at his residence.

Born on June 1, 1959, in Germantown, he was the son of the late Donald and Victoria (Hildenbrand) Handwerk.

He was a proud graduate of Germantown High School’s Class of 1977, where he learned to excel at math.

Karl was a believer who loved God and enjoyed different styles of worship, which led him to be a member at Crossroads Church in Bensalem, City Reach Church, and Memorial Presbyterian Church of Fox Chase.

He found joy in watching the Philadelphia Flyers and Phillies, as well as the Iron Pigs; collecting baseball cards, taking his chances on scratch-off cards; playing video games, Bingo, dining with others, and wearing baseball caps. Classic TV shows served as an escape for him, especially Popeye the Sailor, Mork and Mindy, Three Stooges, and the Beverly Hillbillies.

Karl celebrated his independence and took full advantage of it, using SEPTA regularly and attending the PATH Day Program.

He had a gregarious laugh that was infectious.

Karl will be lovingly remembered by his sister: Donna Adamoli; nieces: Dawn (Jimmy), Deanna (David), and Christina (Christopher); nephew: Carl (Amy); great-nieces: Meiani, Kaitlyn, Alyssa, Analisse, Aubree, Alayna, Alura, Adalie, and Raya; great-nephews: Dominick, Alexander, Theo, and Parker; the Hahn family; as well as extended family and friends.

A graveside service will be held in Quakertown Union Cemetery on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 11:00am.

Arrangements are in the care of the C.R. Strunk Funeral Home, Inc., Quakertown.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, a tax deductible donation could be made in Karl’s honor to:

Alive and Kickin’ Living with Lynch Syndrome (https://www.aliveandkickn.org/donate-now).
